Position Summary:  The System Engineering Manager is responsible for managing the team and tasks of the system engineering department (including system requirements and validation, functional safety management, and cyber security) in the N.A. region.  The System Engineering Manager is responsible for the department OP/SP budget planning, meeting project targets and department goals within the limits of the established financial business plan.  This includes providing strategic and technical direction to the System Engineers, Functional Safety Managers, and Cyber Security Engineers in terms of "operational excellence" (processes, methods, tools, etc.).


Position Responsibilities:

• Manage and oversee all technical related system engineering, functional safety, and cyber security activities within the region to support internal and external customers.
• Develop staffing plans, risk assessments, and internal solutions to improve systems engineering standards, performance, and processes in the region, in alignment with similar functions in other regions within E-Div.
• Responsible within the NA region for HR alignment, training, and qualification of System Engineers, Functional Safety Managers and Cyber Security Engineers.
• Process owner for all processes relating to System Engineering, Functional Safety Management and Cyber Security.
• Ensure that the local Functional Safety Management and Cyber Security are following Corporate ZF internal safety requirements and guidelines.
• Oversees that all customer requirements and system requirements are met. 
• Responsible to ensure that customer and system requirements are linked together.
• Ensure documentation for system requirements and validation meet corporate quality standards.
• Escalation point for System Engineers, Functional Safety Managers, and Cyber Security Engineers.
• Support the annual business planning process for the business unit by determining demand for headcount, equipment investment and operating expenses based on planned development programs.
• Cooperate and share experiences with all product development groups within the division, globally.
• Work closely with project management and development teams, locally and globally, to ensure business development, new business acquisition, and overall performance targets are met for the division.
• Monitor progress and completion of all System Engineering, Functional Safety, and Cyber Security related development project topics with respect to timing, quality, and cost targets.
• Actively support the sales activities for the region, regarding System Engineering.
• Manage and oversee System Engineering, Functional Safety, and Cyber Security tasks for new business acquisition from RFQ through customer deliverables.
• Prepare and present information packages to demonstrate the company’s technical capability to customers, suppliers, and internal functions; identify and resolve customer system related issues.
• Release engineering cost analysis for customer inquiry and company product development.
• Responsible for system requirements and validation, functional safety/cyber security plans and integration, and ultimately customer acceptance.
• Manage troubleshooting activities for system level customer issues and ensure that all activities are completed to achieve a final root cause/corrective action resolution with the customer.
• Primary liaison between other departments, divisions, and product lines for system engineering topics
• Meet with customer representatives from project management, engineering, quality, and other personnel at customer locations, as necessary.
• Identify organizational skill requirements, assess gaps in key skill areas, implement strategy to close the gaps and strengthen the organization and provide adequate succession planning.
• Manage department performance by reviewing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and implementing other metrics where applicable, measure ongoing performance.
• Manage processes surrounding performance management, hiring, releasing, salary increases, promotions, and approval of purchasing requisitions, while ensuring adherence to company policy.
• Approve capital procurement of materials and services.
• Maintain a safe, clean, productive work environment for employees satisfying ZF quality standards/policy.
• Ensure positive employee relations and provide support for annual employee feedback survey.
• Lead continuous improvement programs, provide input to senior management and provide support to team to drive business unit directives.
• Ensure compliance with the ZF Quality Management System requirements (ZF QMS) which includes IATF 16949, Automotive Spice, Customer Specific Requirements (CSR), ZF corporate policies, and divisional directives. Initiate and support the development of new procedures if necessary.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Essential Skills and Experience:

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field
• 12+ years advanced experience (preferably in a powertrain product development environment in the automotive industry)
• Proven ability to work independently and lead engineering staff, professionals, and management with decisiveness and diplomacy
• Proven knowledge and ability in methods of communication, motivation, negotiation, and conflict management skills with a high level of initiative/drive
• Advanced knowledge in conventional and/or electric powertrain systems (i.e. conventional/hybrid transmissions, electric axles with e-motor/inverters/gear reduction)
• Experience with configuration and revision management in an automotive environment according to Automotive Spice
• Knowledge of SAP
• Proficient in IBM Rational DOORS environment
• Expert-level problem solving and analytical skills
• Ability to influence and engage at multiple levels within internal and external organizations
• English language competency – both oral and written
• Excellent project and planning abilities
• Able to manage multiple responsibilities
• Proven interpersonal communications and listening skills
• Strong drive for teamwork with a customer-oriented approach to projects
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft® Word and Excel
• IATF 16949 and Automotive Spice awareness training
• Ability/willingness to travel both domestically and internationally
• German Language Skills
 

Preferred Skills and experience:

• Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
• 10+ years of experience with conventional or electrified powertrain technology
• 5+ years of project management and/or supervisory experience in an engineering environment
• Additional education and/or formal training in project management and finance
• Knowledge of 5S and Six Sigma problem-solving methodology
• Commercial know-how on project key figures and financials
• Knowledge of Clear Case/Clear Quest, MKS, GIT or PTC Integrity
• Knowledge of ISO 26262
• Spanish and German Language Skills
