Design Engineering Supervisor

Position Summary: The Engineering Lead Design Supervisor is responsible for leading a team of design engineers in the execution and development of reliable transmissions designs, which ensure new or modified products are able to be manufactured, meet customer specifications, and maintain company standards, in addition to serving as a primary technical liaison for design activities in order to support internal and external customers.


Position Responsibilities: 

•    Lead and direct a design engineering team in execution of all design activities including concept work, customer prototype and vehicle builds, calculation and design of components for automatic transmissions.
•    Work with ZF engineering teams (program management, test, controls and resident) and departments
within global R&D, in addition to other departments such as purchasing, quality, and sales, in order to
support business development, capacity, and continuity.
•    Assign, check work, track progress, enforce company policy, review performance, initiate Changes-In-
Status, train and motivate employees, champion individual and team efforts, and aid in the development of
professionals to achieve individual leadership, company goals and objectives.
•    Ensure team meets objectives related to the design procedures and specifications established by division R&D.
•    Direct the release and maintenance of drawings and bills of material (BOMs).
•    Support System and Design FMEAs with engineering quality department.
•    Provide analytical guidance and technical expertise to design engineering team to define, design, and release modifications to parts and customer-specific parts for existing base transmissions.
•    Provide consultation to customers on design and provide technical support for license projects, including informing customer, where applicable, to the latest developments.
•    Direct communications with OEMs, suppliers and internal departments such as sales, purchasing, and quality, on design issues for production and OEM applications (i.e. deviations, specifications, simultaneous engineering process, quotation process, etc.).
•    Design related development and improvement of transmissions or transmission components using self-conceived drafts or customer initial draft according to functional, economic requirements and customer specifications.
•    Review non–conformances for technical feasibility. 
•    Support the change management process between production facility and customer.
•    Training of new employees in transmission design and ZF processes.
•    Participate in continuous improvement programs and provide support to team efforts.
•    Assist in the establishment and monitoring of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and implementing other metrics where applicable; measure ongoing performance. 
•    Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, formal training, reviewing professional publications, establishing and expanding professional networks, and participating in professional societies. 
•    Ensure departmental compliance with all TS16949 policies and procedures.
•    Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Essential Skills and Experience:

•    B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering field
•    8-10+ years advanced engineering experience in a product development, testing, and/or manufacturing environment 
•    Working knowledge of technical aspects of applications engineering and product design/development (specifically within a powertrain and/or automotive context)
•    Proficient with Microsoft Office software
•    Ability to interface with cross-functional teams and all levels of personnel/management
•    Ability to work independently and lead staff, professionals with decisiveness and diplomacy
•    Strong problem solving and analytical skills
•    Good verbal and written communication skills
•    Able to manage multiple responsibilities (i.e. self-starter, self-motivated)
•    English language competency
•    Ability/willingness to travel (up to 10%)
  

Preferred Skills and experience:

•    Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering 
•    10+ years of experience as a product engineer or design engineer within a powertrain development and/or manufacturing environment (specifically within automotive industry)
•    2+ years project management or supervisory experience
•    Knowledge of 5S and Six Sigma problem-solving methodology
•    TS16949 awareness training
•    Experience in Automotive industry
•    Spanish and/or German Language Skills
