E-Mobility Controls Project Leader

Position Summary: The Controls Project Leader (CPL) is an advanced level professional who acts as the central technical point of contact for software and controls systems (e.g. mechatronics, control unit, sensors, wires, etc.) within R&D projects assigned.

The CPL represents the assigned project(s) within the Project Core Team and to the customer. In addition, the CPL is responsible for customer product development initiatives and to ensure the seamless and timely integration of ZF products into customer engineering projects by applying ZF processes.

The CPL manages budget planning for the assigned project(s) and monitors budget spending throughout the year

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Manage tasks for the Development Project Team for a software (SW) project or a controls system and is thus entitled to instruct team members.
  • Responsible for the development scope of a SW/controls project within the Project Core Team.
  • Represent the development scope of a SW/controls project to the ZF expert departments and the ZF System Team, as well as to the customer.
  • Act as the main point of contact for the customer, which includes conducting regular customer development status meetings and technical reviews, as well as synchronizing the customer/supplier product evolution process (PEP).
  • Manage the development budget for the assigned SW/controls project.
  • Define the development strategy to achieve project objectives.
  • Work together with internal system engineering to develop the SW/Controls system specification.
  • Oversee the technical content, create schedules and adhere to deadline of milestones of the assigned development projects while concurring with global Program Management directions.
  • Manage the SW/Controls system design product evolution process (PEP), checklists, releases, and gate approvals. 
  • Review requirements to ensure compliance with engineering principals, ZF company standards, customer specifications, and the regulatory framework.
  • Assign requirements to the controls hardware (HW) systems, e.g. mechanics, mechatronics, and to the software projects. 
  • Managing the technical and financial tasks related to change management. 
  • Act as the liaison between the R&D basic development team (worldwide), the core technology team (worldwide) and the direct customer team (North America).
  • Synchronize the production of customer specific parts within the project team, e.g. by aligning construction milestones of hardware parts with milestones of software development.
  • Determine feasibility of requested software changes regarding local and global government regulations, ZF internal processes and availability at coding and integration departments.
  • Support root cause analysis and error correction of system level problems related to mechatronic systems, control units, sensors, and wiring.
  • Coordinate parts procurement for prototype builds during development phase.
  • Develop good working relationships with customers and ZF departments worldwide.
  • Support audits and internal reviews, as required.
  • Ensure compliance with the ZF Quality Management System requirements which includes IATF 16949, ISO 26262, Automotive Spice and Customer Specific Requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • B.S. in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Software, etc.)
  • 7-8+ years of experience in leading technical projects
  • Experience in the Automotive and/or Electronics industries
  • Ability to interface with cross-functional teams and all levels of management
  • Self-starter with strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent project planning and organizational abilities
  • Able to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills to mediate among different projects on critical decisions
  • Strong drive for teamwork with a customer-oriented mindset
  • English language competency – both oral and written
  • Experience with Microsoft® Word and Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability/willingness to travel (infrequently)

 

Preferred Skills and experience:

  •  M.S. Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Software, etc.)
  • Technical Product expertise of conventional, electrified, and electric drivelines / powertrains
  • 3+ years of professional experience in automotive development in the field of control unit electronics or control unit software
  • Proven ability to work independently and lead engineering staff, professionals, and management with decisiveness and diplomacy
  • Attested knowledge and ability in methods of communication, motivation, negotiation, and conflict management skills with a high level of initiative/drive
  • Experience in leading a product to mass manufacturing
  • Commercial know-how on project key figures and financials
  • German and/or Spanish language skills
  • Microsoft® Project
  • Knowledge of DOORS, Clear Case/Clear Quest, MKS, GIT or PTC Integrity
  • Proof of IATF 16949 and Automotive Spice awareness training
  • Knowledge of ISO 26262
