Controls Engineer

Position Summary: The Sr. Controls Engineer is an advanced-level professional that serves as the primary technical liaison between internal teams and the customer for software and diagnostic calibration topics, supporting integration of the ZF product into target vehicle systems.  The controls engineer is responsible to support implementation of software functional changes and diagnostic calibration changes as necessary.  The controls engineer is also responsible for timely issue analysis and resolution.  Advanced knowledge of customer requirements and vehicle/system operation is expected.  It is expected that the individual is capable in all responsible areas and can support less-experienced colleagues. It is further expected that the individual will take leading roles in complex projects and propose/implement process and quality improvements.  In all cases, it is expected that the controls engineer follows all established processes.


Responsibilities 

  • Liaise with customers and internal teams on complex or highly critical projects to clarify requirements, software specifications/functions, calibrations, and issues.  Create and use various presentation media to communicate clearly.  Provide guidance and direction for junior engineers.
  • Act as the primary technical contact for customers and internal teams regarding complex or highly critical customer design change requests including effort estimation, requirement analysis, and specification.  Provide guidance and direction for junior engineers.
  • Support expert teams as assigned.
  • Develop software requirements and functional specifications for responsible customer specific software modules.  Take lead on complex features.
  • Perform and document requirement and specification reviews with requirements engineers and functional developers according to established processes to ensure product quality and traceability.  
  • Propose and support software change process and tool improvements.  Take responsibility to create and maintain local processes.
  • Calibrate and validate transmission diagnostic and control functions for assigned projects accounting for software changes, customer requirements, and transmission operational boundaries.  Lead calibration effort for complex changes.  Calibration activities are performed in a desktop, simulation, or vehicle environment as appropriate.
  • Plan calibration and validation activities to meet program timing deliverables.  Determine appropriate calibration strategies to ensure alignment across multiple project variants.  Create and assign calibration jobs to achieve alignment at appropriate project milestones.
  • Create, annotate, and evaluate calibration change reports.  Document calibration changes and supporting tests to ensure product quality and traceability.  Provide guidance and direction for junior engineers.
  • Analyze and understand reported issues from customers and internal teams including effects on the vehicle system and how it might be perceived by a driver.  Determine issue characteristics like severity, frequency, complexity.  Take lead for complex multi-disciplinary issues.
     


Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Software, etc.) and 6+ years of engineering experience (min. 4 in a related role)
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong technical knowledge of software design/development within a powertrain and/or automotive context
  • Proficient in office productivity tools and familiarity with scripting and/or programming language(s) (i.e. Python, C++, C#, etc.)
  • Able to work independently, manage multiple responsibilities (i.e. self-starter, self-motivated), and provide guidance/training to others
  • Able to interface with cross-functional teams and all levels of personnel/management
