Controls Engineer

Position Summary: The Controls Engineer is an experienced engineer that serves as the primary technical liaison for the customer for all functional software changes and customer issues related to ZF conventional and electrified powertrain technology and is responsible for the coordination and execution of such functional changes according to internal and external requirements. In addition, the Controls Engineer is responsible for customer product development initiatives and the seamless and timely integration of ZF products into customer engineering projects. They should have an in-depth understanding of the customer requirements and how the component (esp. software) should integrate with the vehicle system.


Position Responsibilities: 

  • Perform calibration engineering activities, including but not limited to creation of desktop and test calibrations, calibration compares, the creation and execution of system-level development and validation test plans, development of functional test procedures and scripting, and performance of verification testing.
  • Analyze and resolve software issues using independent analysis or collaboration where necessary, or assign to appropriate individuals or teams, according to internal process.
  • Discuss software change content and issue details with the customer and provide feedback on progress.
  • Track customer design change requests from analysis through to delivery including coordination of individuals and expert teams throughout the organization.
  • Analyze, estimate effort, and provide feedback on customer change requests.
  • Work with functional developers on customer design change requests to communicate the vehicle system level requirements and purpose of the change request to ensure the intent of the customer request is met.
  • Document and process software requirement changes according to established internal processes.
  • Specify software change requests as necessary for responsible software modules (basic signal conditioning).
  • Review specifications with functional developers, software developers, and other controls engineers to ensure high quality standards.
  • Support internal activities including testing and software delivery as required to ensure complete test coverage and smooth delivery of software. Evaluate software for production approval based on internal guidelines.
  • Develop calibrations for diagnostics and software control functions and track calibration releases
  • Develop working relationships with customer and internal departments (i.e. teams assigned to other modules); ensure that all engineering changes have no effect on modules or variants (design and test).
  • Perform root cause analysis and error correction of system-level problems relating to mechatronic systems, hydraulic systems, sensors and wiring; support root cause investigations and special testing to resolve test incidents as assigned through the open issues list.
  • Provide clarification and technical explanation of ZF product specifications, calibration solutions, and component functions.
  • Ensure departmental compliance with all IATF16949 policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

*Ability/willingness to travel (up to 25%)

 

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Software, etc.)
  • 3-4 years of engineering experience (includes co-op and/or internship experience)
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Working knowledge of technical aspects of applications engineering and product design/development within a powertrain and/or automotive context
  • Familiarity with scripting and/or programming language(s) (i.e. Python, C++, C#, etc.)
  • Able to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities (i.e. self-starter, self-motivated)
  • Able to interface with cross-functional teams and all levels of personnel/management
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software


Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • 0-2 years of experience as a customer quality engineer or resident engineer within a powertrain development and/or manufacturing environment (specifically within automotive industry)
  • Experience with data acquisition tools (e.g. ETAS INCA, CANalyzer, etc.)
  • Experience with requirements management and related tools (IBM Rational Software Tools)
  • Deep knowledge of the technical components and critical functions of conventional and electrified powertrains
