About the team:  This role will be joining a growing team of 12 engineers and 2 technicians based in Lafyette, Indiana supporting the Powerline automatic transmission for the medium duty commercial vehicle market.  The Powerline is an 8 speed torque converter equipped automatic transmission that is quickly gaining market share in North America and the world.  Powerline currently has best-in-class shift comfort and fuel efficiency – hence the need for a growing engineering support group.  The North American team works closely with our design colleagues in Germany, and our new production facility in Gray Court, South Carolina.  Come join our team of highly motivated individuals working with one of the most advanced automatic transmissions on the market today, and for one of the Top 5 automotive suppliers in the world.

What you can look forward to as a Field Test Engineer:

We are looking for a Field Test Engineer to lead the build & operation of demo/engineering/ field test vehicles with advanced powertrains. This position will be interfacing with end-customers, OEMs, local engineering, and central engineering. The Field Test Engineer will also be responsible for engineering lab coordination for the tear-down, evaluation, assembly, and function-testing of our powertrain products.

 

  • Perform test engineering and related analysis as required to support internal and external customers. Document lab and field test plans and publish test reports for the development and validation of current and new transmission products. Work with test personnel to execute plans.
  • Manage the interactions with end-customer fleets to install our products, train drivers, get performance data, and address any topics that arise.
  • Design, setup, configure, and operate test setups, fixtures, and instrumentation as required by test plans, test standards, and customer instructions.
  • Perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis of issues in transmissions. Ensure completion of all 8-Ds for testing-development issues.
  • Give effective presentations to critical/high level customers and effectively represent work group on review panels and cross-organizational teams. Write convincing proposals and reports with all necessary backup material for external consumption.
  • Preparation of work-instructions for all aspects of Engineering Test Trucks, Transmission evaluations, and Lab Testing activities.
  • Provide technical support to the Field Organization, Service Organization, Procurement Organization, Sales and Marketing Organization, Original Equipment Manufacturers, and vendors.
  • Work with ZF engineering teams (program management, design, control and resident) and departments within global R&D.
  • Plans multiple projects simultaneously. Estimates, tracks & completes project on time and within budget. Create tasks and timelines required to complete assignments.

 

Your profile:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 3 years minimum of experience within powertrain engineering.
  • Customer and supplier interface experience preferred.
  • Either have (or have the ability to obtain) a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License).
  • Capable of managing a variety of engineering projects, prepare formal presentations, and maintain project document files. Strong problem solving and analytical skills. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to interface with cross-functional teams and all levels of personnel/management.
  • Working knowledge of measurement techniques, hydraulics, and vehicle testing techniques. Familiarity with data acquisition systems, data analysis, and data processing.
  • Strong Functional/Product Knowledge, ability to train others.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability/willingness to travel both domestically and internationally (up to 25%).
