Validation Engineer

Position Summary:

The Validation Engineer has ownership over product integrity as it pertains to validation of conventional & electrified automotive powertrain systems under development.  Translates technical requirements & customer expectations into optimized validation plans, defines test objectives & methods, supports test execution, analyzes results, & ultimately makes technical acceptance decisions.  Serves as a specialist-level technical liaison between ZF Development and its internal & external customers.

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the qualification & release of electrified driveline sub-systems and parts within a project.
  • Creates DVP&R’s in concert with Design Engineering & Simulation teams based on risks & historical data.
  • Defines test objectives, specifications, instrumentation requirements, test setups, & acceptance criteria. 
  • Supports Test Operations Teams with test setup, execution, & troubleshooting, as necessary.
  • Performs & documents test specimen inspections & coordinates advanced component analysis.
  • Investigates & characterizes test failure modes with feedback to relevant Design & Quality counterparts.
  • Creates & presents highly professional customer and/or management reports/presentations.
  • Supports production facilities with deviations, engineering changes, quality topics, & new product launches.
  • Interfaces with OEM customers on application engineering projects & series production topics.
  • Works closely with R&D Project/System Management to provide costs & testing project milestones.
  • Responsible for managing testing project timelines and tracking efforts by project.
  • Contributes to internal problem management workflows including FMEA’s, risk analysis, & RCA’s.
  • Leverages global R&D expertise/capability to effect progress & growth for Region North America.
  • Drives continuous improvement of validation methods, engineering processes, & ZF’s product portfolio.
  • Serves as a liaison between Base/Core Development & Project Development Teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision & provides reliable technical guidance.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, formal training, reviewing professional publications, establishing, and expanding professional networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Ensures departmental compliance with all TS16949 policies and procedures.
  • Works in accordance with 5S standards
  • Maintains an organized and hazard-free work area in compliance with all ZF policies and governmental guidelines to ensure a safe and productive work environment.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

 

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • B.S. in Engineering (Mechanical Preferred)
  • 5 Years of Experience in Testing Within a Powertrain and/or Related Area
  • Solid Functional/Product Knowledge, Ability to Train Others
  • Relies on Experience and Judgment to Plan and Accomplish Goals
  • A Wide Degree of Creativity and Latitude is Expected.
  • Working Knowledge of Automotive Powertrains, Measurement Systems, and Testing Methodology
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Software
  • Familiarity with Data Acquisition Systems, Data Analysis, and Data Processing
  • Ability to Interface with Cross-Functional Teams and all Levels of Personnel/Management
  • Strong Problem Solving and Analytical Skills
  • Able to Manage Multiple Responsibilities Concurrently
  • Superior Interpersonal & Communications Skills
  • Strong Verbal and Written Communication Skills
  • English Language Competency
  • Ability/Willingness to Travel Both Domestically and Internationally (up to 25%)

 

 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5+ Years of Experience with R&D Validation for Automotive Electric and/or Conventional Driveline Products
  • Knowledge of 5S and Six Sigma Problem-Solving Methodology
  • Familiarity with Plant Operations, Including Machining, Assembly and Heat Treatment
  • IATF16949 Awareness
  • German Language Skills
