WABCO Compressor Manufacturing Co. has job openings (multiple) for the position of Sr. Engineer Product Design based out of its location in North Charleston, SC.

Job Duties:  Perform detailed mechanical design and analysis of reciprocating air compressors; Manage projects from concept to production; Evaluate different concepts (own, competitors, suppliers) to find best cost option using DFA & Six Sigma methodologies; Consider design rules & standards and foster standardization; Initiate and follow-up patent analysis and identify ideas for own patents; Create prototype document and support building prototypes; Provide guidance to other team members (test engineers, test technicians, etc); Create and change series documentation (drawings, test instruction, DFMEA, etc); Maintain regular interface with onsite personnel as well as external teams to ensure simultaneous engineering; Prepare and participate in design reviews, Perform and document simulation including finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), thermal analysis, bearing load analysis, and analytical calculations; Create and maintain documents including 2D and 3D drawings, test instructions, design FMEA, risk assessment, significant and safety characteristics, and product validation record (PVR); Resolve design issues arising in daily production; Work with customers and suppliers to resolve product issues; Perform gap analysis to industry requirements and competitor products. Up to 20% travel to domestic and international locations to visit customers to collect customer requirements, perform design and product reviews , supplier visit and new supplier development.

Requirements:  Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field, plus 7 years of work experience (or a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5 years of work experience) as a Mechanical Designer, Design Engineer or any occupation in which the required experience was gained, and demonstrated experience with: Engineering concepts, practices & procedures for mechanical devices or air compressors used in automotive industry for vehicle brakes (e.g. CAD, metals, metallurgy, chemicals, fluids, thermal area analysis); Metal casting, machining and manufacturability for steel, cast Iron and aluminum, must have expertise in the various grades of the materials; Honing; CAD 3D Modeling & Drawing skills in Creo or equivalent 3D CAD Software, must have the skills to perform 3D motion analysis; PLM in Windchill or equivalent, to perform design changes and tasks including check-in/out, change routing, approval & implementation processes; Thermal and fluid dynamics including compressible and incompressible flow; Structural & thermal simulation FEA and CFD including Creo Simulate, Autodesk CFD, ANSYS or equivalent software; FEA to perform structural and thermal analysis of the components; CFD analysis under steady state and transient flow conditions; MathCAD & Minitab to process match with quality, durability, and reliability; Excel including pivot tables, curve fit and regression analysis, data analysis; DFM/DFA, DFMEA, GD&T; 6Sigma techniques and tools; Customer communication to collect requirements and deliver design to match; and Heavy vehicle pneumatic braking and system safety including vehicle electrification & electric air compressor technology.
